Prime Minister Narendra Modi met India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 medal winners at his residence in New Delhi on Sunday and congratulated them for their performances in Glasgow. The meeting came shortly after India finished fourth in the Games’ overall medal standings.Soon after the interaction, Modi shared a video from the meeting on X with the caption, “Always #Cheer4Bharat.” The video showed gold medallist boxer Sakshi Chaudhary and other members of India’s medal-winning contingent. In the video, Sakshi said, “Hello friends! This is Sakshi Chaudhary. Today, our honourable Prime Minister has invited us, the Commonwealth Games medalists, and we feel very proud. We are extremely happy to have met him; he is very humble. Sir, would you like to say something?”Modi responded, “Jo khelega, woh khilega” (The one who plays, will blossom). Always cheer for Bharat.” He later led the athletes in chanting “Bharat Mata ki Jai” three times.

India’s Glasgow campaign

India finished the Commonwealth Games with 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze — despite sending a much smaller contingent than in Birmingham 2022. India had 122 athletes in Glasgow compared with 210 in Birmingham, while 30 of Birmingham’s 61 medals came in sports that were not included this time.

Do you think the Indian government is doing enough to support athletes?

Despite fewer opportunities, India retained fourth place and had 38 athletes return with medals. Gulveer Singh was the only Indian athlete to win two medals. The Glasgow Games also marked the handover of the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which will host the centenary edition in Ahmedabad in 2030.
