Pune: Baba Bhide bridge in the Deccan Gymkhana area has been opened for vehicles, giving much-awaited relief to commuters on JM Road, Deccan Gymkhana and Peth areas.Maha Metro has said the work on the foot overbridge (FoB), for which Bhide bridge was shut for the past few months, has reached its last phase. There is no more requirement to keep the bridge shut for the entire day. The closures will be planned only as per requirement to assist the remaining work. As per the plan, the bridge will be open for vehicles and walkers on all other days.Maha Metro plans to finish the remaining work of the FoB by Dec.However, commuters have said the rest of the work should be planned during night hours or on lean days and holidays. The administration should strictly avoid a complete closure of the bridge, said Vikas Limaye, a commuter in the area. He added that the entire area around Bhide bridge has been facing huge traffic snarls for the last three days despite the bridge being open for vehicles. “Metro work is dragging a lot and closure of the bridge is obstructing the overall traffic flow. There is no point in pushing ahead the work by closing the road. Opening of the bridge will reduce traffic snarls on JM Road, Lakdi Pul and the areas of Deccan Gymkhana and Peth areas,” Limaye said.According to Narayan Peth resident Vikas Kale, the closure of Bhide bridge was affecting traffic flow on Kelkar Road, Laxmi Road and Narayan Peth. “Lakdi Pul has been witnessing heavy traffic. The Metro administration should set a deadline to finish the remaining work,” Kale said.Officials from Maha Metro said the basic structure of the FoB is ready, with the girder’s launch to be taken up in phases. Road barricading will remain at the site for some days. The FoB will provide direct access to Metro commuters from Deccan Gymkhana station to Sadashiv Peth and Narayan Peth.
