Swami Vivekananda: Quote of the day by Swami Vivekananda: “Learn everything that is good from others, but bring it in, and in your own way absorb it; do not..”; What does the monk advise on staying curious and learning

Swami Vivekananda was an Indian monk who founded the Ramakrishna Mission and introduced Vedanta and yoga to the Western world. He wasn’t just a spiritual teacher, but he cared deeply about India’s poverty and education, contributing to practical, service-based reform, not just philosophy. He once talked about the beautiful idea that people often feel a strange kind of confidence that comes from meeting people, cultures, and ideas very different from our own. It doesn’t come from agreeing with everything we see, nor does it come from rejecting it either.Instead, it comes from a quieter place, knowing what to absorb, and knowing who we are while we accept and learn about it. This is a harder balance than it sounds, as most people tip one way or the other. Some either close themselves off, calling every outside influence a threat to their culture or their beliefs. Others go the opposite way, copying whatever looks impressive without asking if it actually fits them.

Quote of the day

Learn everything that is good from others, but bring it in, and in your own way absorb it; do not become others

Swami Vivekananda

What does Vivekananda actually mean by this quote?

By saying “Learn everything that is good from others”, Vivekananda does not tell anyone to stay in a shell. He’s asking people to stay curious, to notice what is good in other disciplines or individuals, and to be humble enough to admit that good ideas don’t belong to only one place.“But bring it in, and in your own way absorb it”; this is the core idea of the quote. People often mistake learning for something like swallowing it whole. Vivekananda uses the word “absorb” to explain that, just as a plant absorbs sunlight and uses it to produce and process its own food, it doesn’t become the sun.In the same way, he’s asking us to digest new knowledge through our own values, our own context, our own history, so that what comes out the other side genuinely belongs to us.

He warns against becoming someone else

Imitation without absorption leads to a kind of identity loss. You end up as a copy, not a person. Vivekananda saw this as spiritually and culturally hollow, useful for nobody, least of all the person doing the copying. This idea wasn’t abstract for him. He lived it. He studied Western science, organisation, and social reform, yet he never suggested India should discard its own philosophy to become a copy of the West. He wanted to bring about a change, not replace the values.

Why it still matters today

We live in a far more connected world than Vivekananda ever did, which makes his ideas relevant today. A student today can watch a lecture from Oxford, follow a Japanese productivity method, and admire a Scandinavian design style, all before lunch. That connectivity is a genuine gift, but it also makes it easy to end up as a combination of borrowed opinions and borrowed aesthetics, with very little of one’s own thinking left in reality.
