Why making people feel seen and heard matters more than confidence

Think about the people you remember after a party or a long conversation. It is rarely the person who talked continuously about themselves. More often, it is the person who asked a follow-up question, remembered a tiny detail or gave you their full attention while you were speaking.
Psychologists call an important part of this perceived responsiveness: the sense that another person understands you, validates what you are saying and cares about your experience.
A 2022 review, “How to foster perceived partner responsiveness: High-quality listening is key,” found that high-quality listening and perceived responsiveness are closely connected. The researchers describe listening not merely as staying silent while someone talks, but as behaviour that communicates understanding, positive regard and care. This helps explain why someone can be incredibly charming without being particularly extroverted.
