He stopped playing cricket, gained weight and became breathless. Then one run at 60 changed everything

At 60, He Started Running Without Proper Training. What Happened Next Turned Into a Decade-Long Fitness Journey (Image Credit: Shared by Sandeep Sharma)

Sport had always been part of Sandeep Sharma’s life. He had played cricket at a high level in Delhi, while his father had been a Delhi state football captain. But after leaving his job, work, food and daily habits changed. By 2006, Sharma said his body had changed dramatically.“I had completely lost track of my fitness,” he recalled. His young son eventually pulled him back towards cricket. Sharma started playing with children on weekends, even though a brisk walk could leave him breathless. That small return to sport became the beginning of something bigger.

He built a playground, one morning at a time

After moving to a new place, Sharma noticed a large overgrown patch of land that could become a playing ground. Others thought the idea was too difficult.Sharma started working on it himself. He would leave home around 4 am, clear bushes and move soil. He even arranged a roller to level the pitch. The work left his legs scratched and bleeding at times, but he continued. The ground eventually became a place where children played cricket. Sharma also began teaching them and invested part of the fees into equipment. Then a dispute over the ground forced him away from the cricket field he had helped create.

February 3, 2016 changed the direction

On that date, Sharma made a decision that seemed almost impulsive. He put on his running shoes and went out.He had never prepared for a long-distance race. Yet on February 22, just weeks after starting to run, he attempted a half marathon. There was a price for rushing it. He struggled badly afterwards and could barely get up for around 15 days. But something had clicked.“Running gave me a different kind of comfort. Emotionally and mentally, my mind became clear,” he said.Instead of stopping, Sharma sought guidance. He reduced his running for several months and focused on strength and physical conditioning.

At 60, fitness became a daily responsibility

Today, Sharma follows a structured routine around running, strength training, food and recovery. His normal wake-up time is around 5 am, although his training schedule changes depending on the workout. He tries to finish dinner by around 8 pm and usually sleeps around 10 to 10:30 pm. His approach also changed with age. He does not try to eat the way he did at 30.“The body you have at 60 is not the body you had at 30. Even the internal organs have aged, so the load has to be reduced,” he explained.

His real message is not about running

Sharma does not see his story as a race against age. He sees sport as something that keeps him connected to life.He continues teaching children and also helps young people who want to pursue the Army or sports. His goal is simple: show people what can happen when movement becomes a priority.“People think they don’t have time for health. But priorities are decided by us,” he said.Disclaimer: This article is based on an individual’s personal experience and should not be treated as medical advice.
