6 Indian wildlife destinations where snakes are the real attraction

When we talk about safaris, the mental picture is a familiar tiger or elephant emerging from tall grass or deer crossing a forest road. But the truth is most Indians are not aware that wild encounters are not always four-legged, they can also be crawling or slithering sometimes. Across Indian rainforests, mangroves and coastal landscapes, India is home to an extraordinary reptile diversity. From the king cobra and Indian rock python to some of the country’s most elusive snakes, these animals can turn an ordinary wildlife escape into something far more unusual. And with Nag Panchami being observed across India today, August 17, 2026, there is perhaps no better time to look beyond temples and mythology and explore the real-world habitats of India’s snakes. Here are six destinations where snakes are the real attraction:Agumbe, KarnatakaAgumbe, set deep in Karnataka’s Western Ghats, is among India’s most fascinating destinations for snake lovers. Its rain-soaked forests are particularly linked with the king cobra, one of the world’s longest venomous snakes.

The place is also known for Agumbe Rainforest Research Station which was founded in 2005 by herpetologist Romulus Whitaker. The station sits amid the forests around Agumbe and Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary. For travellers, Agumbe is more about entering the kind of rainforest ecosystem where snakes and other reptiles are an integral part of the landscape.Bhitarkanika, OdishaThis is the place known for the mangrove world ruled by snakes and reptiles. Odisha’s Bhitarkanika National Park is a vast mangrove ecosystem and among India’s best destinations for snake-focused wildlife viewing. The state tourism department describes it as India’s second-largest mangrove ecosystem and highlights its large congregation of pythons. Visitors here can travel through the mangrove network by boat and experience muddy banks and waterways for crocodiles and other wildlife.

On Chennai’s East Coast Road, the Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology offers perhaps the easiest reptile-focused wildlife experience. It was founded in 1976 by Romulus Whitaker and Zai Whitaker. Today, the centre houses more than 35 species of captive reptiles, while free-ranging reptiles around the property include the common krait, common vine snake, Indian rat snake, Russell’s viper and saw-scaled viper.

A reptile safari is not about chasing snakes through forests. These are wild animals, and sightings are never guaranteed. Travellers should never approach, touch, feed or attempt to photograph a snake at close range.
