Another day of triple-digit rain in Maharashtra’s Western Ghats; Tamhini route remains shut

Pune: Several stations in Maharashtra’s Western Ghats logged triple-digit rainfall for yet another day on Monday, while rain-related incidents claimed two lives across the state in the past 24 hours.Tamhini in Pune district emerged as the wettest location with 200mm rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8.30am on Monday. Among other stations that logged triple-digit rainfall were Shirgaon (140mm), Dawdi (132mm), Tansa lake (124mm), Tulsi lake (118mm), Bhira (105mm), Lonavla-Off (103mm) and Upper Vaitarna lake (100mm). Bhivpuri received 86mm, Khand 84mm and Lonavla-Tata 82mm.The Maharashtra State Emergency Operations Centre ‘s daily casualty report stated that two people died in rain-related incidents between Sunday and Monday morning. One person was killed and another injured in Ahilyanagar after a wall collapsed during heavy rain. Four animals also died in heavy rain in the district. Another person died in Solapur after being washed away in floodwaters.Rivers in parts of Konkan continued to be closely monitored. The Jagbudi river at Khed in Ratnagiri district crossed the warning level, though it remained below the danger mark. Other rivers, including Kundalika, Amba, Savitri, Patalganga, Ulhas, Gadhi, Surya and Vashishti, were flowing below warning levels despite continued rainfall.Intermittent showers continued in parts of Pune district on Monday. Between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Monday, Narayangaon recorded the highest rainfall at 22mm, followed by Girivan (20mm) and Bhor (17mm). Chinchwad received 13mm, Talegaon 11.5mm and Nimgiri 9.5mm. Among city stations, Shivajinagar recorded 7.3mm, Pashan 6.4mm, Dapodi 6mm, Koregaon Park 5.5mm and Hadapsar 1mm, while Shirur received 3mm, Dudulgaon 2.5mm and Baramati 0.4mm.Authorities have continued restrictions on key routes in the Tamhini region. As per the Pune district collector’s July 7 order, the Pune-Malegaon-Raigad section of National Highway 753F passing through Tamhini Ghat remains closed until further orders because of road damage, landslides, overflowing streams and the risk of further slope failures.The continued spell has kept the ghat region saturated, with authorities maintaining a close watch on vulnerable stretches prone to landslides and flooding.
