The sea is not often calm for very long. When strong winds blow across the water, they can lift fine droplets of spray from the tops of waves and carry them through the air. Seen from the shore, this spray can look like a thin mist, spreading across the surface and showing just how strong the wind has become. This effect is known as spindrift, a term used mainly by sailors and people who live or work near the coast. Although it is most often associated with rough seas, the same word can also describe fine snow blown across open ground by strong winter winds, producing a similar drifting appearance.
