Woman office-bearer of NCP attempts self-immolation during Pune ZP’s general body meeting

Pune: High drama unfolded at the Pune Zilla Parishad (ZP) building after an office-bearer of the NCP’s women’s wing from Baramati attempted self-immolation during the general body meeting on Monday.She was intercepted by ZP security personnel before she could set herself on fire. Following the incident, a senior NCP member from the city was summoned to the ZP headquarters to take the woman to a hospital.Before leaving the premises, the woman spoke to the media, alleging that an elected NCP member of the Zilla Parishad from Baramati had cheated her. “The member was in a long-term relationship with me but has now refused to marry me,” she claimed.Pune ZP president Virdhaval Jagdale ordered an inquiry into the security breach, questioning how the woman was able to smuggle kerosene into the general body meeting hall.No police complaint has been registered so far. Rajlaxmi Shivankar, deputy commissioner of police (Zone V), told TOI, “No one from the Pune Zilla Parishad has approached us with a formal complaint yet.”
