Harsh Goenka calls IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe a ‘hero’; his reply about public service wins attention |

When business tycoon Harsh Goenka called IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe the “hero of the evening,” he was basically saying out loud what a lot of everyday folks were already thinking. Mundhe, who heads up Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA), had been making waves by going after dark stores, unhygienic restaurant kitchens, and adulterated food.Instead of soaking up the spotlight, though, Mundhe did something that says a lot about how he operates. He completely brushed off the personal credit. His response cut right to the point: “Public service is never about an individual. It is about a collective commitment to serve citizens with integrity, courage and conviction.”

How the buzz got started

Goenka, who leads the RPG Group, ran into Mundhe at a gathering and later shared his impressions online. He noticed how people naturally crowded around the officer. But Goenka’s post went beyond just giving Mundhe a pat on the back; it posed a pretty candid question about civil service in general:Why do we treat a public official doing their job with straightforward honesty like a rare superhero, instead of just expecting that as the bare minimum? That struck a real chord. Unsafe food, expired items shipped out by delivery apps, and filthy kitchens aren’t just high-level administrative issues – they directly touch what people feed their families every day. So when an officer actually gets out there and enforces the law, people notice.

Where Mundhe was coming from

Mundhe’s reply flipped the narrative back where he felt it belonged. Rather than leaning into the “hero” label, he highlighted a few basic truths about working in government: – No one works in a vacuum: Any big operational win – from raiding a facility to cracking down on faulty dark stores – takes an entire crew of field inspectors, junior staff, and office workers pulling in the same direction.Fame is random: Scores of dedicated officers across the country work quietly every single day, doing incredible ground-level work without ever getting noticed by corporate headliners or going viral.Doing your job isn’t extraordinary: As Mundhe put it, an honest, citizen-first approach shouldn’t be celebrated like a rare trick. It ought to be the basic standard across the board.

What this whole exchange really means

What makes this back-and-forth worth paying attention to isn’t just a friendly interaction between a corporate chief and a senior bureaucrat. It’s the reality check it gives us about public expectations. When doing basic, honest work turns a public servant into a celebrity, it shows just how starved people feel for accountability. By steering the conversation away from personal fanfare and back toward collective responsibility, Mundhe made a point that’s hard to argue with: public office exists to serve the public, not to build up someone’s personal brand.
