A video showing a country’s problems can quickly shape how people see it, especially when social media gives such content a wide reach. But does that tell the whole story? A Japanese content creator living in Mumbai has raised this question after noticing how India is often portrayed online. Her views have sparked a discussion among social media users, with many sharing their thoughts on why no country should be judged by its shortcomings alone.Hikaru-san moved from Japan to Mumbai eight months ago. In a recent Instagram video, she spoke about her experience of living in India and why she wants people to see a more complete picture of the country.
Japanese woman challenges negative image of India
Hikaru-san said online content often presents India as a poor and dirty country. She argued that such portrayals leave out other aspects of life in the country. She also pointed out that littering is not exclusive to India, as rubbish can be found in some places in Japan, too. She encouraged people to visit India, experience its culture and interact with its people before forming an opinion. She also criticised content creators who, in her view, present a misleading picture of India to attract views and engagement.
‘I want to show how beautiful and amazing India truly is’
Hikaru-san spoke positively about India’s food, culture and people, saying she wants to show these aspects to a wider audience. In the caption accompanying her Instagram video, she wrote, “Moving to India changed the way I see so many things. I want to keep showing the world just how beautiful and amazing India truly is.”
Social media users share their reactions
The video prompted users to discuss how everyday problems, including garbage and littering, can be found in different parts of the world. One user described living in a safe and clean neighbourhood in New York City for 20 years but recalled the unpleasant smell of garbage left on the pavement for collection. The person also mentioned seeing a video of rubbish overflowing from bins on Brooklyn Bridge.Replying to the comment, Hikaru-san wrote, “Exactly! Every country has its own problems, even places we imagine to be perfect. No country is perfect, and I think it’s important to see the good sides too!”Another user pointed to India’s large population while explaining why the number of people involved in negative incidents might appear higher.“It’s simple math. Every country has good and bad people. But India’s population is in the billions, so even 1% of India’s population is equal to a lot of countries’ entire population. Which means, number-wise, India might have more ‘bad’ people, but that’s just because of the massive population!” the user commented.Other reactions included, “Thank you for giving such wonderful points.”Another user praised Hikaru-san, writing, “You have a good heart, and god bless.”However, one person added a more critical observation about the cost of living in India, commenting, “India is indeed amazing; you just don’t have to be absolutely broke.”Disclaimer: The views expressed in the social media posts quoted in this article are those of the respective users.
