In 2014, he surprised audiences by conducting a lengthy question-and-answer session at Beijing’s Tsinghua University almost entirely in Mandarin.The interest has extended to his family as well. According to reports, his daughters Maxima, August and Aurelia are learning Mandarin because Zuckerberg wants them to understand both the language and Chinese culture from an early age.

Kerry Brown, Professor of Chinese Studies and Director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College London, told ABC News that China’s position as the world’s second-largest economy makes learning Mandarin a practical investment for anyone interested in global business and technology. He noted that many influential figures believe economic engagement with China will remain important for decades.At the same time, academics argue that language is inseparable from culture. Ning Zhang, Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies at the University of Adelaide, said AI may translate words, but it cannot replace the human relationships, cultural understanding and face-to-face communication that language learning develops. According to her, learning Mandarin is about understanding people- not simply converting one language into another.

What parents can learn from this trend

This doesn’t mean that every child must learn Mandarin. Instead, this trend highlights a broader picture. In the age of technology, human abilities- such as communication, adaptability, and cultural awareness can become even more valuable than technical skills. For these influential families, the reason behind having their kids learn Mandarin is not being done for the sake of extracurricular activity, instead- it’s like an investment in helping their children understand what’s going to hold more value in the future. For them, global connections will matter as much as technical knowledge.
