5 traits that make someone a better and reliable friend

Some people just seem to be good at friendship: the ones everyone wants around, the ones whose relationships seem to last decades without much visible effort. It’s tempting to write this off as personality or luck, but being a good friend isn’t really a fixed trait; it’s a set of specific, learnable habits that show up consistently over time. Given how strongly social connection is tied to long-term health and well-being, understanding what these habits actually are matters well beyond just being liked. Here are five worth building deliberately.

Showing up consistently, not just when it’s convenient

Reliability tends to get overlooked as a friendship quality because it sounds unglamorous compared to things like humour or shared interests, but it’s often what matters most in practice. Loyalty, reliability, and trustworthiness tend to function as genuine non-negotiables in a friendship rather than nice-to-haves, while qualities like being especially forgiving or emotionally perceptive are more of a bonus on top. In other words, someone can be less charming or less funny and still be a genuinely great friend, but a friend who consistently doesn’t show up rarely stays close for long.

Responding to good news with real enthusiasm

This one is easy to underestimate. How a person responds to a friend’s good news often says more about the health of that friendship than how they show up during hard times. Being distracted, lukewarm, or quietly competitive when a friend shares something exciting sends a stronger signal than most people realise, while genuinely enthusiastic, curious engagement, asking follow-up questions, and actually celebrating rather than just acknowledging, is what tend to deepen the bond over time.

Willing to go first with vulnerability

Friendships often stay surface-level simply because both people are waiting for the other to open up first. People often reserve behaviours like vulnerability, generosity, and emotional openness exclusively for romantic relationships, which quietly limits how deep a friendship can actually grow. Sharing something real about your own struggles, doubts, or day-to-day life, rather than keeping every interaction light and surface-level, tends to be what gives a friend permission to do the same in return.

Investing actual hours, not just good intentions

Good intentions alone don’t build closeness. Genuine friendship tends to need real accumulated time together, casual friendliness turning into real friendship, and real friendship eventually turning into closeness, largely on the back of hours actually spent together rather than just warm feelings from a distance. That’s a useful, if slightly humbling, reminder that closeness isn’t purely about chemistry or compatibility, it’s substantially about accumulated time, which means consistently showing up for smaller, lower-stakes hangouts matters just as much as the occasional big gesture.

Practicing honesty without sacrificing trust

Honesty sounds like an obvious friendship virtue, but it matters specifically because it’s tied so closely to trust. Honesty tends to sit consistently alongside loyalty and trustworthiness as one of the qualities people consider non-negotiable in a close friend, often more essential than traits like emotional intelligence or being conflict-avoidant. The habit worth building here isn’t blunt or careless honesty, but the kind that’s paired with care, being someone a friend can trust to tell them the truth gently, rather than either avoiding hard conversations entirely or delivering them without any thought for how they land.

Friendship is a practice, not a personality type

What’s genuinely reassuring here is that none of these five habits require a particular personality to pull off. Reliability, enthusiasm for someone else’s good news, a willingness to go first with vulnerability, showing up consistently over time, and honesty paired with care are all things that can be practiced deliberately, regardless of whether you’d describe yourself as naturally outgoing or naturally reserved. Given how strongly stable friendships are linked to long-term wellbeing, treating these as habits worth building, rather than traits you either have or don’t, is arguably the more useful way to think about it.
